(Yet there was a can of roach spray under our kitchen sink - not a good sign).

When we took the bread to the front office, the guy there denied that he ever had a problem with roaches or mice. The morning after our first night there, I noticed that something had eaten into our as-yet unwrapped loaf of bread on the counter. It was way too small for 2 adults and 2 children. When the bed was pulled out, you could barely get around it to get to the door, and you could not open the refrigerator. I do not consider a pullout sofabed stuck in a small kitchen to be a living room. We stayed in the Cowrie - one of the "efficiency" apartments that had been described to us as having a "living room" with a seperate bedroom. I was not thrilled about the cockroaches, of which I killed an average of four a day. They were understandable, considering the island environment.

So, bigger beach, more sand, unobstructed view of the Atlantic, same large pool only shared by two cottages now and complimentary kayaks and paddleboards, plus completely new landscaping, and the addition of the pavilion down on the waterfront by the boat basin. The Ocean View Cottages have a spectacular unobstructed view of the Atlantic, and now since Irma, they are beachfront also, as the small beach front cottages are gone. What used to be called Ocean View, The Seahorse, and The Horse Conch Cottage, are fine, and have been booking all season. What they have now, is two stilted two bedroom two bath cottages, with pull out sofa sleep that can sleep 6 people in each cottage. The ground floor cottages, as well as the office building were completely destroyed, and removed. It is true, Little Conch Key Cottages were hit hard by Irma. The only negative was the highway, it's possible to hear at night if you are walking near the marina or are staying at one of the cottages near the entrance. It was the ideal place to stay for a family vacation. A nice, big, public beach nearby is called Sombrero - only 15 minutes away and next to a Publix grocery store. We had plans to tour around but ended up scrapping a whole day to just hang out at the cottage. The service was perfect - quick to respond to requests, not intrusive. We met some of the other guests, who were very friendly. There's a little marina near the parking lot which had a jelly fish one day, lots of grouper and other fish swimming around in there.

We took the free complimentary kayak out around the corner of the little island to a small reef so many times, saw conchs (those guys can move fast when they want to), puffer fish, bonefish, starfish, and tons of different kinds of sponges. There's a beautiful heated pool, but the beack was the fan favorite. The cottage was clean and comfortable, with nice little touches that made it far more luxurious than we were expecting. TVs in both the master bedroom and living room. The master bedroom was huge with a king bed, the smaller bedroom was a double but had glass doors to a back deck. We stayed in cottage #9, a 2 bedroom plus sofa bed. The one bedroom non-stilty cottages are along the beach. The little island has 2 rows of cottages along a stone path, the two bedroom cottages are the back row but are on stilts and the decks have a great view of the water.
